"And so it will come down," or "How to Train the Reader"?
As many of you know, this month came the second official graphic novel from DreamWorks titled "Dragonvine" ("Dragonvine"), which continued to talk about the events between "How to Train the Dragon 2" and "How to Train the Dragon 3". And before he appeared on the shelves of shops, as we have already announced the third and final comic called "The Fire Tides" ("Fire Tides") .
The date of its release is not yet appointed, but most likely, the comic will be released in the beginning of 2019, just before the release of "How to Train the Dragon 3". Around him already managed to pick up a lot of hype, and that's only in this comic book does not promise screenwriter Richard Hamilton:
- the history of Valka, from the moment she left the Owl, and until the moment she met Ikking;
- Several important points that reveal Astrid as a character;
- some "Atlantis of the Vikings", which, apparently, will refer to the "Hidden World";
- they promise to reveal the dragon "Fathomfin" (for the time being we will translate it as "Glubomer"), which was first presented to us on the 30th page of the first comic book "Heir to the Serpent";
- Several important points that reveal Astrid as a character;
- some "Atlantis of the Vikings", which, apparently, will refer to the "Hidden World";
- they promise to reveal the dragon "Fathomfin" (for the time being we will translate it as "Glubomer"), which was first presented to us on the 30th page of the first comic book "Heir to the Serpent";
- and also promise to show Ikkinga with a bare chest.
And in connection with the fact that two of the three comic books are already available for reading in Russian in the photo albums of our group, we decided to sum up what we have for them at the moment and remember where the idea with these "graphic novels" came from and what was originally expected to see in them.
So, let's start with the fact that in October 2015, DreamWorks announced the release of just three graphic novels, in which they promised to tell about the events that occur after "How to Train the Dragon 2". The main idea for creating these comics was the desire to create a certain "bridge"between the second and third part of the franchise. Well, because the series, according to Hamilton himself (the comic bookwriter), to do extremely costly in terms of budget and time, they decided to make this "bridge" in the form of three comic books in which one could not limit oneself to graphics, but make everything as quickly and simply ( an example was given, they say, the same water, fire and huge landscapes are rendered for a very long time, and to draw much faster and even better). And, of course, we all tended to something grand, for finally we were going to show the continuation of the second part. And even in the form of a comic strip, not a series, many were still extremely pleased with it.
So, the first comic called "The Serpent's Heir" was announced on April 26, 2016, and the fans took on what they can do best - sit and wait for news.
Time passed, and for some reason the comic did not come out. In May, 2016, on the official "Comics Day" (the first Saturday of May), there appeared a fragment consisting of 10 pages, entitled "Burning Midnight" . Naturally, many immediately folded 2 + 2 and assumed that this passage refers to the comic book "Heir of the Serpent". But it was soon officially announced that "Burning Midnight" is a separate comic strip, timed to "Day of Comics", but about "The Heir", nothing was said either. But even so, most fans have calmed down a bit. After all, in the provided passage, that the idea that the drawing was rather interesting. We were shown how the guys are sitting in a cave, remembering really interesting stories about Stoic, revealing some interesting details (for example, they told us that Oswald the Razublyuzny was previously known as Oswald Gruby), and at the end they showed some arachnids and promised to tell more about them in the upcoming comics. Naturally, this excerpt raised the expectations of the fans, and everyone started waiting for the news on "The Heir to the Serpent" with renewed vigor.
Then, at the end of May, rumors started circulating that the release date for the first graphic novel had been postponed to February 28, 2017. Half a year passed and in October 2016 Dark Horse finally re-announced the official release date of the "Heir" on February 15, 2017. However, as a result, the comic still ends on February 28, 2017.
But even taking into account the fact that while waiting for the first comics, "How to Train the Dragon 3" managed to be moved from 2018 to 2019 - the expectations from the "Heir" were not small. However, when the comic finally came out, many received not exactly what they were expecting.
Certainly, "Heir to the Serpent" did not turn out to be a failure, not at all. In it there was though a little strange, but nevertheless really qualitative risovka. However, the plot is not remembered absolutely nothing. Yes, the issue of discontent with "foreigners", such as Eret, from the part of the inhabitants of Oluha, has risen. Yes, it has been shown that the local people are not very used to the new leader, Ikking, and that's really pleased. However, it was expected that the audience will be presented with some hints of the Third part, and on the whole told a one-time story, with a one-time antagonist and one-off new side characters from the Island of Nepatia, about which the viewer, with an extremely high likelihood, in the upcoming comics and full-length hears absolutely nothing. They simply will never appear again anywhere, and nothing will be said about them. What was the promised connection between "How to Train the Dragon 2" and "How to Train the Dragon 3" then?
But, God be with him. Many wrote off a one-off plot to the fact that this is only the first part, and ahead of us there are still two whole new adventures that will surely be better worked out in terms of the plot.
So, after the release of "The Heir of the Serpent", in the summer of 2018DreamWorks announces the Second graphic novel called "Dragovine" ("Dragon Ternia") , spreads a synopsis to it and announces the release date: February 6, 2018 . In the synopsis it is said that the children will encounter some spider-dragons. Well, many fans immediately realized that the passage "Burning Midnight"referred us to the Second Comic, and that for sure this passage will be associated with it, which, of course, could not but rejoice.
Time passed, and in January of 2018, the comic book is suddenly transferred to August 7 , and then to the beginning of September 2018. Once again, there are some misunderstandings, for a long time no information appears at all, and we all have to wait "from the sea of weather." Finally, in the summer of 2018, the official release date appears on September 4, 2018.
And now, not so long ago, there is the Second Comic called "Dragon Ternia", which ... again does not justify the expectations placed on it. Moreover, he leaves behind a huge number of questions.
First, the comic began with the very passage "Burning Midnight". However, this fragment began with the fact that the guys are sitting in a cave, almost all the dragons, except for Bezubik, have disappeared somewhere, and behind the cave are some arachnids. It would be more logical to assume that this is the middle of the comics, and we are at least hinted at how everything came to this situation, but the Dreams for some reason decide to start the narrative in the comic from that moment, without giving any backstory, which is rather strange.
Secondly, as soon as the fragment "Burning Midnight" ends, something really strange begins on the 17th page of the comics. Drawing clearly becomes different, and clearly less attractive. As a result, it turns out that the first 16 pages were drawn by one artist ( Doug Wheatley ), and all others - the other ( Francisco De La Fuente). Okay, say, the Dreams had some force majeure and they replaced the artist, who later did not even try to repeat the drawing of the first pages. But since the 17th page of the comics in the original is even a different font! When translating, we certainly did everything in one font, but why it was done, and what did DreamWorks want to emphasize? In the head, voluntarily not at ease, thoughts begin to appear that the comic has not simply been postponed to half a year, but on the whole it was done at a relatively quick pace and with such strange bindings.
Thirdly, even if we release the graphic components of the comics, we once again put in a one-time plot. Undoubtedly, the very idea with the Dragon Trees initially sounded quite good: a kind of massive natural weapon against dragons - it's really something new and interesting. But the way it was revealed later in the comics itself, which once again devalued the very idea of graphic novels. The story at the end had absolutely no consequences. Everything remained the same as it was before, except that Ikking was wearing some kind of jacket under the suit, and added pants, very similar to the prototype of jeans with a fly. And the writers were so proud of this fact in an interview for "Dragon Dropouts", that it becomes somehow uncomfortable (right now I would shove a modern jacket in Ikking). As one of the interviewees said: "I think DreamWorks decided to facilitate the work of cosplayers. So that they do not look for too many different materials to create a costume, Dreams gave Ikking an ordinary modern leather jacket. " The stew is not bad, but the fact remains that Ikking is obviously not dressed in Viking style.
Yes, of course, it was nice to see such a character as Skulder , who doslo appeared only in the game "School of Dragons" . But, again, adding it to the official comics, which, in theory, is the canon, it turns out that all the events of the game are now also officially recognized? It is so?
But even if all this is true, we again faced one-time characters and events. After all, the Negroid tribe, shown in the comic, certainly will not appear anywhere in the future. After all, such a cool idea with the Dragon Thorns simply, as a result, is bent in the framework of one comic book, and also will not have any consequences in the future. And this despite the fact that even the comic book consisted of 87 pages, it turned out to be quite torn, constantly jumping from one place to another, and as a result did not even disclose any interesting details about the Dragon Thorns. It turns out that everything that left a comic after it, it's a hint in the last page that Oluh is not just an island, but its essence in people who live on it (hello, "Thor: Ragnarok") ?And, you know, the question is brewing: what is the promised "bridge" between "How to Train the Dragon 2" and "How to Train the Dragon 3"?
Yes, there is another comic ahead of us, and it is possible that there will be more interesting things to show us, which will lead the reader to the final part of the franchise. At least, they promise a lot of interesting things, and there you really want to see a really useful history, whether it be the background of Valka, or the disclosure of the "Hidden World". But if we consider what we have at the moment - these are just two one-time stories, which have absolutely no consequences for any further events. And the stories themselves are written in an extremely childish style. Undoubtedly, this is not just a huge minus, children also need to read something, and I'm sure they quite liked both comic books. But why then DreamWorks declares that every year the franchise becomes all grown up, but at the same time the released content, such an impression,
